I BELIEVE

“We all … make mistakes,” Cole insisted between puffs of air. After much begging and pleading from Fox Fire, he’d agreed to join her in the gym for a workout after their classes had ended.

He grunted, lifting all 175 pounds of himself into his ninety-seventh pull up. All the while trying to convince Fox that no one cared about the blunder during weaponry. “Vye won’t care about this by tomorrow, she’s got too much to concentrate on to remember getting revenge on you.”

Fox peered up at him from her position on the floor. “You’re talking about Elimination.”

“It’ll be starting by the end of the week, I can feel it.”

“Can we depend on your feelings?” she mocked, sliding into a split.

“I think so. This is the same feeling I got when I was down in the basement, right before things got really serious.”

“And you think Vye is aware of this?”

Cole grunted—ninety-eight. “Everyone’s aware of it; it’s like a sixth sense. You’d know if you’d gone through the Dark Days, I can’t really explain it.”

“So what do you think will happen then?”

“I don’t know,” he sighed—ninety-nine. “Could be anything really.”

Fox paused. “I don’t want to die.”

“No one wants to die.”

“I’ve fought so hard to get here.”

“Have you?”

She jerked her head back. “Just because I wasn’t locked in a basement doesn’t mean I’m any less of a student than you.”

“It’s not about the Dark Days.” Cole dropped from the metal bar and poured his bottle of water over his head, trying to cool down. It dripped through his thick hair and rolled over his lean body, making his muscular frame more than noticeable beneath his thin t-shirt.

“Then what’s it about?” Fox pried her eyes from his figure.

“A Stone girl shows up out of nowhere and joins the program in the middle. What are you even here for?—what are you fighting for, Fox Fire?”

Her lips parted but no sound came out. She was speechless.

“Do you even know?” Cole squatted beside her, leaning so closely Fox couldn’t help but blush.

“I had a reason to fight.” She scooted away from him. “But I don’t know now.”

“You’ve fought so hard to get here, eh?” he grumbled, standing up to remove his shirt.

Fox looked away, picking through his words. From the moment she’d first met KI she lived for him. She lived to see his smile and to hear his laugh, but now with his anger toward her and his unforgiving spirit, how could she dedicate her actions to the likes of him? But, if not for KI then who was she doing all of this for? No one seemed so fitting but him. Fox hadn’t seen him since the day she left for the Academy.

“If you’re not even sure what you’re fighting for, then how can you say you deserve to be here?” Cole asked. He changed into a dry shirt and collected his things as he moved toward the door.

“I’ll find it,” Fox said, her words pulled him to a halt.

“Find what?”

“I’ll find the reason why I fight, I’ll figure it out.
